May 31, 2010 - This weekend was the Robert Cameron Law Corporation Cycling Series. It consisted of three great races put on by local sponsors & the field was the best cyclists of BC... Friday night was the Trek Pro City Bear Mountain Hill Climb where we raced the clock up a grueling 3.3km & 10% hill. I think I set the women’s record with a time of 8:33 which would have placed me 8th in the men’s field behind local pros like Ryder Hesjedal and Rob Britton.

After Joe Martin, Katheryn headed straight to France to race the 10 day Tour de l'Aude with the US National team. This is probably the most prestigious international stage race for women - it is a women-only race that has been going on for something like 20 years & has the highest UCI ranking for a women's stage race. Basically the equivalent of the Tour de France for women. Katheryn took her first European stage win here yesterday and rocketed from 14th to 2nd on GC!

May 16, 2010-Sacramento, CA The men get a whole stage race for the Tour of California while the women unfortunately only got to race a 1-day criterium in downtown Sacramento, but at least we got something and the organizers (not the same organization that puts on the men's stage race) did a good job putting on a first year event.

May 20, 2010 Bakersfield, CA – The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis put Rory Sutherland, Marc de Maar, Chris Baldwin and Matt Crane in the front group after the peloton split apart on the first KoM of the day going up Old Stage Road. “That was a pretty cheeky move on Radio Shack’s part to hit it on the climb,” Baldwin said. The tactic severed the peloton into several groups, with Baldwin, Sutherland & de Maar in the front group, & Crane in a chase...

"Hot or Cold? Heat or Ice? Near the latter stages of a long ride I often hear riders say I'm going to the hot tub tonight because I need it after today's exertion. I also see it at the gym when after vigorous workouts or classes people hit the hot tub, steam, or sauna right away. Yet I see professional athletics wrapped in ice bags after their games. So which is the best way to go after a century ride or an extreme workout?"

The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis rode through a deceptively difficult 4th stage of the Amgen Tour of CA Wednesday, but came through in good shape for the key upcoming key stages.
“Today was hard,” Rory Sutherland said of the transitional stage which included the first category 1 climb of the race. “Sierra Road actually wasn’t that bad. Garmin let the break go early and we just rode tempo up the climb. But we rode hard to bring them back.”

"I've done a lot of riding, but I'm kind of old-school, and now everyone is talking watts. Can you please quantify what three watts means? Isn't this relative to distance? What about the length of the climb? How does this factor in?"

Sutherland was joined by Marc de Maar & Max Jenkins over the climb, while the lead group caught Karl Menzies, one of two survivors of the day’s main break on the descent.

There is something every competitive cyclist has to battle through at some point. It's the big "C" word... crashing. However, there is a bigger "C" word, CONFIDENCE. The question now is, how can we get confidence back and ride without "our knees knocking." Here's a few things to focus on:

This was one close race! Katheryn went into the final stage 4.3 sec. behind Alison Powers. With time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds for the top 3 places in the stage, she had to either take time out of Alison or be 1st or 2nd on the stage without Alison being in the top 3. The Webcor team gave their all and Katheryn found her sprinting legs to take 2nd on the stage (winning the field sprint) but unfortunately for us, Alison took 3rd, giving her the win by 0.3 sec!

Matt Crane attacked late out of a nearly race-long break & almost held on to take the victory in the final stage of the Joe Martin Stage Race. Fortunately, it was his teammate Karl Menzies who just nipped him at the line. Crane joined a two-rider move on the 3rd lap of the 90-min race, which increased to four a few laps later when Caleb Fairly (Felt-Holoweski) bridged up. The four riders, including Aaron Kemps (Fly V) & Ken Hanson (Team Type 1), worked well together...

Team TIBCO/To the Top was a constant presence at the front of the GP Stad Roeselare (UCI 1.1) last Sunday, figuring in the main break of the day, and mixing it up in the sprint finish. Joanne Kiesanowski was the team’s top finisher in 7th place, but her placing didn’t reflect the influence the team had on the race. “The girls are racing great,” team directeur sportif Chris Georgas stated simply. Team TIBCO continued its aggressive tactics, putting its stamp on the race.
