Oakland, CA – Summer break is over for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis stage race squad, though, as Rory Sutherland noted, “it’s not like we stopped working the last four weeks. We just weren’t racing.”
Sutherland and the stage race squad got a hard-earned and much needed break following the Nature Valley Grand Prix as well as le Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce in Quebec, which ran concurrently in June. Both races finished a month ago with Sutherland’s dramatic overall victory at the NVGP, and Marc de Maar’s two stage wins and 3rd overall at Beauce.
“I’ve been doing a lot of training to push on toward the rest of the season,” Sutherland said. “The rest of the year is just as important as the first part. I’m looking forward to getting back to racing with some of the guys who I haven’t raced with since Gila and Tour of California in May.”

In addition to de Maar, that includes Chris Baldwin, who was part of the Beauce squad. “Having a break is always good to recharge the legs and the mind,” Baldwin said. “But everyone will be fired up to get back to it. We want to start off the second half on a good foot. Cascade is one of the most enjoyable races on the calendar. Bend is a great community and it’s just a really fun race. ”
Sutherland, Baldwin and de Maar will have ample support from Max Jenkins and Morgan Schmitt for the steeper pitches, while Matt Crane and Brad White will provide engines for the flats and rollers. Andrew Pinfold will handle sprinting duties for the squad.
