My hemoglobin is checked prior to donating blood and I've been refused occasionally for being too low. My doctor says I have "athlete's Anemia". But I'm typically right on border. But all this is somewhat off the initial issue of performance effects for those with low Hb after donating. Your article addresses those with normal Hemoglobin levels. What decrease in performance can those of us who have low Hemoglobin levels to begin with expect to see?

"I read recently that there's a cumulative effect of racing and training at the pro level, and that each season builds on the last. Does one have to train and race at pro level in order to benefit from this cumulative effect or can the amateur also benefit? How does this work? How would I use this year’s riding as an index for setting goals for next year?"

It was a beautiful day in Santa Cruz. It seems every year the Halloween race boasts muddy ground and sunny skies. Perfect! The course at Harbor High was great. It had a lot of elevation change, both running and riding big climbs, some areas for fast riding, and some tricky technical parts. To my mind it was balanced, safe, and fun.

Should I use this cold recovery method for a multi-event day? In other words, if I have two competitions a few hours apart (like time trials) should I use ice therapy in between for recovery? Or, should I just stretch and stay loose?
